Day Before Winter Solstice

Decorating the tree that was felled yesterday. Cedar doesn't really make a traditional
Christmas tree however it smells so good. Later this evening will put garlands of antique glass beads on it. Usually the tree keeps being decorated for days until Christmas Eve.

Holding On

O it may look like the well is back. Yesterday was such a nightmare. The storage tank for the ditch water was gone. Nadda nothing every drop gone. Needed to call the usual pump service people that dug the well and put in the line for the ditch water for irrigation. The workman was very nice and friendly and helpful. He fixed a filtration problem. Then worked on my ditch pump that is sunk into an old septic holding tank from the 70's, discovering a new pump is needed. OMG this company is good and expensive. I need water up here on this hill. He installed a new 1.5 h pump. It did the trick today woke up to full tank of ditch water in the storage tank, that normally would take 2 or 3 days to fill. The biggest surprise of all is the well is spurting water up. OMG thank you!!!

Snow Daze

Here is what the storm did to Fairview.

Sunday, December 6, 2009

Snowing

Prepared the last few days for this day. It has been lightly snowing today on and off. Started the day off by wrapping the outside pipes so they won't freeze. Started fires in both the wood stove and fireplace so far it has only reached 32*F outside. Supposedly a hard freeze is coming for the next few days the lows down to 18* and highs of 32*. Mighty cold up here in the woods of Northern California.

Thursday, December 3, 2009

Bear Country

Well the bear discovered the last tree of Golden Delicious that was not picked. Must have been two of them because the scat was different colors. Eeewwww. puuuuuu. Yep living in the woods is so much fun.

December Morn

It is hard to believe the end of another year is quickly approaching. So much has happened in only a year. Yesterday another 7 quarts got canned. Decorating for Christmas begins.

Windy Day Recovery

Managed to survive the 60-80 mile an hour winds yesterday. High intensity with much angst as flying projectile flew by making life a little dangerous outside. Power was off for 7 hrs back on then off again for 1/2 hour. The generator certainly got its tune up for the up coming months. Showers are a daily ritual here. Need to be clean.

Black Ice

Recovering from slipping on the ramp that had black ice. Ouch!!!

Sunday, November 22, 2009

Dehyrdated

Woke up to rain and a cold house. Immediately began the fire in both the wood stove and fireplace to warm up. O nice it feels and smells so good. Decided it was time to do something with the kitchen full of cherry tomatoes, so started cutting them in halve and putting them on trays for the dehydrator. I filled seven trays with those little jewels.

Rain, Snow and Ice

Been cold for the past few days. Yesterday rained much and snow clouds flew through the property. Had to light the fireplace and wood stoves upstairs and downstairs to keep warm. This morning slipped and fell on back from the icy ramp. Thanks no broken anything and at this age o it wouldn't be pretty.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

It is nice to have most of the work done here. Playtime is just to begin

Cloudy Overcast and Cooler

Well been canning, dehydrating apples. It has been such a bumper crop of apples this year running out of room for all of them. The freezer has 6 gallons of juice in it, 3 pies are on the kitchen island, the dehydrator is full. the basement fruit and room shelves are filling up quickly with applesauce, spiced apples and quarters of Fuji and Golden Delicious. Apples are everywhere in the house. Only have one more tree to finish picking and it happens to be the best Golden Delicious since it receives water once a week during the watering season.

Birthday Month #25

Truck sprung a leak. Only 1/2 of an apple tree to pick in the orchard. Hurray!!!

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

After the Birthday

Well made 1/2 gallon of apple juice this morning to add in the freezer with the other 2 gallons of juice that was made earlier. Canned 7 pints of applesauce early afternoon. Thinking of canning apple quarters this evening. Apples and more apples and still need to pick 6 more trees.

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

It's A Birthday Today

Feeling a bit old now that 60 is here. Can't believe it is here. Oh well never thought about reaching this age. Wishing to just run away and hide. The apples are calling however.

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Birthday Month #18

Well tried picking apple trees before the rain, didn't make it. Tired after gathering wood and picking trees. Only about 6 trees left. Cut the wood that was gathered and stacked it. It rained early evening with more predicted for tomorrow.

Saturday, October 17, 2009

Birthday Month #17

After the storm many ground apples to pickup. Only eleven more apple trees to pick. The bear has not returned to the orchard, even though the last few days the radio has been forgotten to be turned on.

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Birthday Month #15

It rained hard two days ago, yesterday not so much, this morning, so far, very lightly.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Rainy Day

Woke up to the sound of wind and rain. Beautiful. Only need to pick 13 more apple trees. The bear discovered the orchard however damage was minimal.

Friday, October 9, 2009

Birthday Month #9

Felled a neighbors dead cedar tree this morning cut it up into pieces and finished yesterdays oak pile. Returned to pick apples in the orchard Harvesting is late this year. Usually apples have all been picked by now. The cooler weather didn't come until late. Nature is not predictable.

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Birthday Month #8

Not posted lately since nothing really going on except the usual pick tomatoes, pick up ground apples and water. Yesterday did pick the Fuji apple tree. Beautiful apples and tasty also. Today picked the Red Delicious and another variety the name escapes the ole memory. It is the beginning of apple harvest for sure at Fairview. Fall is in full swing. The neighbors gave Fairview two truck loads of oak. Stuff trimmed off a tree hanging over a structure. Happy to receive such a gift, now time for cutting and stacking.

Monday, October 5, 2009

Birthday Month #5

Happy Birthday Dad. Sure do miss you. You left such a great hole in the hearts of those that loved you so dearly. Hope you are watching over Fairview and guiding it along to its path to prosperity. Your death on September 11, 1991 will be remembered for all time.

Sunday, October 4, 2009

Birthday Month #4

BRRRRRRRR!!! is the expression for today. Much colder today than any other. Fall is here apparently. Thinking of last Sunday when it was 100*F and so far today only 62*F. What a difference. Made a fire in the stove to warm the house.

Saturday, October 3, 2009

Birthday Month #3

Well it is much cooler today. Decided to continue to water the apples to help with the sweetening up process. The orchard looks good this year. The animals have left it alone except for the birds, knock on wood. Picked some tomatoes this morning. Waiting for the rain if there will be any, now the prediction is for the mountains only. Will begin picking the apple trees on Monday anyway.

Friday, October 2, 2009

Birthday Month #2

It is cooler today and only going to be colder as the weekend progresses. Might need a fire in the stove. Predicted snow for the mountains Saturday night into Sunday.

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Another Cool Day

Not much going on at Fairview only the usual chores water in the morning the vegetables, pick tomatoes and pick up ground apples. Next week planning on harvesting the apples from the trees. The cooler temperatures of this week will surely sweeten the apples.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Cool Day

It has been a very cool day with temperatures in the low 70's. Cut some wood this morning and stacked it for winter use. Hard to believe it is the last day of September. Where does the time go?

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Busy Day

Well it has been extremely busy today the temperature was cool. Decided to gather wood, cut wood, split wood and stack wood. Afternoon found canning tomatoes and applesauce to be necessary for providing provisions for the coming of winter. It has been an exhausting but fulfilling day.

Monday, September 28, 2009

Cooler and Breezy

Today is cooler with a breeze that is making outside a little challenging. Will be cutting some wood tomorrow since the expected high is only going to be around 67*F. Brrr it seems like fall wants to come in after all. Apple picking is just around the corner. Lower temperatures are expected for a week, perfect for sweetening up the apples. This is one of the latest apple harvests here at Fairview. Had to water the tomato plants today after those blazing temperatures of the last few days. The plants have even begun to bloom again. Will have plenty of green fried tomatoes later. Expecting to can some more tomato puree tomorrow. Busy days are here again at Fairview.

Hopefully One Of The Last Days Of 100*F

Well it is another day the temperature has risen to 100*F. Inside the house it is 83*F. A little hot and making it difficult to do any kind of activities. Probably will need to take a nap and wake up when it is cooler. The basement apartment stays cool. Going that direction in about an hour to lie down upon grandparents 30's bed surrounded by their vanity and chest of drawers. Have loved this set forever beginning at birth. Spent many a moment sleeping there cuddled in between my grandparents, when the nightmares where too much to handle alone.

Saturday, September 26, 2009

River Day

It was so hot today decided the river was the place to be. It was 106*F at 1:00 pm called a friend and of to the river surprisingly it was not that crowded. Too many dogs unleashed however. Things cleared around 4pm leaving such a peaceful paradise. Departed around 5pm after finishing scrabble.

Friday, September 25, 2009

The Water Is Back

Yes the water was flowing again in the ditch at 2pm yesterday making its way to the storage tank here at Fairview Farm. Such a delight to hear and see that water flowing into an empty storage tank. The tomatoes were finally given some water at 11 am this morning. The pump won't work until the float is in the correct position. That is usually about half full. The storage tank holds 15,000 gallons of water. During fire season usually like to have it full at all times. Anyway did 2 loads of dishes in the dishwasher last night, load of laundry today, showers, watered the plants on the deck. Water water water.

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Water Flowing

Yes indeed the water in the ditch is flowing again bringing water to Fairview Farm. Thought of going to the river today just to bathe however not needed since the shower will work perfectly. Water is a necessary element in growing and living. Thankful the ditch is fixed. Now let it rain, let it rain, let it rain to bring the well back in compliance.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Hotter Day

It was only a mere 102* F on the deck today. Great and no water the ditch has been shut down since the 20th. It is upsetting to have an irrigation system that runs things like Nazis. They only care about money, money and more money. Always raising the rate for water and not giving any real service and shutting the canal in the record breaking temperatures. Not had a shower now for two days and not doing dishes or laundry. Supposedly will be back on soon. Can not wait to much longer.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Happy Autmunal Equinox

Well it is here officially the beginning of Autumn. Feeling a bit overwhelmed with the things that need to be one before winter.

Monday, September 21, 2009

Up and Down the Lazy River

Well maybe down the lazy river is a bit incorrect. However it was wonderful today to be away for awhile at this magical place on the Yuba River with its clear water. The river was down but is still forceful with some rapids and a current that will quickly transport one to another place in no time at all.

Last Days of Summer

Just the normal chores going on at Fairview. Today canned 10 quarts of tomato puree. Expecting abnormal record breaking highs in the next few days. Going to dig up the purple fingerling potatoes later this afternoon.

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Warm Last Daze Of Summer

Very warm today and not much going on besides the usually pick tomatoes, pickup ground apples, water. Did manage to put up 7 pints of applesauce. Nice flavor. Mixed Golden Delicious and Rome Beauty.

It I s Coming

Yep the turning of the seasons is definitely here. Many trees are starting to turn colors. The days a warm and nights cooler. The next few days are expected to be very hot though more like summer. Anyway watered the tomatoes and the rest of the garden getting ready for the heat. More ground apples picked up and thinking of making applesauce for canning.

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Cooler Days Are Here

Rained on Sunday night making for cooler weather here. No need to water until a few days from now and besides the orchard is officially finished with the watering. Ground apples now are being collected and becoming apple cake and juice. Will be harvesting the trees in a few days. The weather is making the apples sweeter and with the help of water it is helping the process. Canned 15 1/2 quarts of tomato puree yesterday. It is finally feeling like an accomplishment of all the hard work started back in March when the tomatoes were started from seed. The deer attacking them and watering them in the extreme heat of summer. It is gratifying to see those quarts and pints all lined up on the shelves in the cold storage room.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

cooler Days Are Ahead

It sprinkled a bit yesterday making the temperatures not so hot and today it is cloudy and windy with temperatures being moderate. Looks like Fall is on its way.

Friday, September 11, 2009

Hot Late Summer Daze

Reaching into the 100's today. Spent the morning watering the plants on the deck. The orchard has been watered entirely. It appears that some of the ground apples are edible. Made a breakfast of them. Picked the daily supply of tomatoes.

Monday, September 7, 2009

Saturday, September 5, 2009

Harvesting

Still harvesting tomatoes, today not as many.

Friday, September 4, 2009

Friday at Fairview Farm

Not much going on here at the farm. Slowly preparing for winter. Thinking of planting a winter garden. Everyone have a happy and save Labor Day Weekend

Thursday, September 3, 2009

More Harvest

Pretty much doing the same chores today except adding unloading the pickup of the Madrone wood my neighbors donated and started watering the Hypericum on the slope and probably for the last of the season the orchard. Also loaded a bed full of Madrone from the neighbors for chores tomorrow. It has been 100* F. on the deck for two days in a row.

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

You say Tomato

Just another day of picking up ground apples, watering the landscape and garden, picking tomatoes, green beans and Numex Big Jim Chili and Anaheim Chili peppers.
